What is creatine?
Creatine is an endogenous substance (i.e. one that\'s produced by your own body) created in your liver, pancreas and kidneys from various amino acids. It\'s then transported to your muscles via your bloodstream. The creatine content of your muscles largely determines the length of time for which a muscle can be tasked to its maximum. This is because ATP (Adenine Tri Phosphate) is formed from creatine. ATP quickly gives you usable energy, and is the energy source for all muscle movements. The more intensive a muscle contraction, the more ATP is used up. Unfortunately your muscle cells contain only a limited store of ATP, which is used up in just a couple of seconds of intensive training. If you take a creatine supplement, the creatine content of your muscles then increases, so more ATP can be formed. That means you can train harder for longer, as your muscles have access to more energy and power and muscle acidification is delayed. Taking a creatine supplement also helps you recover more quickly after a workout. Creatine is completely safe and is not on the doping list. |
